Based in the UK, but visiting
Gaucin often, she has a large courtyard house and studio in the village.
(Available to let to other artists and like minded people)
Best known for her embossed abstract collagraphs and etchings, as
well as her collages and mixed media works. The latest works experiment
with encaustic wax to embed found natural objects, as well as print
elements and collage. Her inspiration is the natural forms, erosion
and textures of the landscape and organic forms, which she finds in
the strong light and shade of the Andalucian mountains. Her recent
move to Sussex has triggered one of her occasional returns to the
figurative, in a series of the winter landscapes of 1066 country.
However her main love is abstracting the essence of the landscape,
in richly coloured textured works, often enhanced with silver and
gold leaf, and the Spanish landscape is a great inspiration.
She has written a book with Richard Clarke, published by AC Black
in 2004: “Collagraphs and Mixed Media Printmaking”. In
2004/06 she toured a collaborative show “Under the Influence”
with Anita Klein, Trevor Price & Mychael Barratt, which opened
at the Bankside Gallery, London, followed by Cambridge Contemporary
Art; Wiseman Gallery, Oxford; Blue Tulip Gallery, Windsor; Pyramid
gallery, York and Castle Gallery, Inverness.
Born in London, Brenda Hartill emigrated to New Zealand with her parents,
in the late fifties, and was educated there, graduating FA honours
at the University of Auckland. She returned to London in the late
sixties, on a New Zealand Arts council grant as a graduate student
at the Central School of Art and Design. She became involved in theatre
design, and after marrying, spent a period lecturing and designing
in University theatre in the United States (North Carolina State University).
She returned to London in the early seventies to take up a British
Arts Council award in the National Theatre at the Young Vic under
Frank Dunlop and Peter James. She then worked as a freelance designer
at the National Theatre, (Fanfare for Europe "Twelfth Night"
at the Old Vic), Criterion Theatre ("Rosencrantz") Royal
Shakespeare Company, Birmingham Rep, Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh,
and the Theatre Royal, York.
In the early eighties, in search for more artistic independence, she
turned towards printmaking and has successfully published her own
work since. She is a fellow of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers
(R E), showing regularly at the Bankside Gallery, London, and at the
New Academy Gallery, Windmill St. She often shows in the RA Summer
Exhibition and the National Print Exhibitions in London, as well as
many solo and mixed shows in the UK, New Zealand, Australia, USA and
Europe. Her work is in the collections of many large companies, including
BP, Bank of England, Global and BT, and her work is sought after by
private collectors, art consultancies, interior designers and architects
worldwide. She lives in Sussex, and has a studio there as well in
Gaucin, Southern Spain. She is married to Harold Moores and has two
adult children.
